100 Details in 100 Days: Day 22

Making eyelets...

Small eyelets are made using a dressmaker's awl (or large needle) and large eyelets are cut. To make an eyelet, start by drawing a circle, then stitch a series of small running stitches around the shape. If it is small, insert an awl to open the shape. If it is large, use a pair of small sharp scissors to cut the fabric and turn the edges under.

Start your blanket stitch over the last running stitch you made and work it very closely around the entire hole, creating a nice bead along the outside edge of the hole. When you are finished circling the opening with the blanket stitch, take your needle to the back of the fabric and finish it off by running it through the satin stitches on the wrong side. The final step is to reopen the hole with a awl or your needle.
